I got a job! Well, that was a week ago. I started Monday! What is this job? Canvassing.
Canvassing has proved to be a very good summer job. Essentially I've become one of those people that everyone hates because I disturb them at home. But despite that, it has allowed me to observe the reactions of people on a more personal level.
The first thing I realized is the decor of people's homes. Not the inside or the outside, but specifically the welcome mats. Who invented this? Honestly for many people their mats should be 'Hello, and F*** off'. Do we really want to welcome people into our homes? I suppose most people prefer to see their friends and family that a sweaty, almost dehydrated young woman on their front step. Or anyone else for that matter.
This then got me into thinking on a more elementary level. Basically Finding Nemo. In said film, there was a point where they explained that if you tap on the glass of a tank, it wrecks havoc in the tank. Therefore, people's homes equal tank and me, the canvasser, is the finger. In which, I guess is the point of canvassing, to rustle some tail feathers. But who you receive is still relevant to Finding Nemo.
The three creatures you may happen to encounter while canvassing are the goldfish, the puffer fish, and the shark. The gold fish is a pleasant character who makes friendly conversation and will not mind listening to what you as a canvasser has to offer. The puffer fish is unpredictable and may remain deflated in agreement or "blow up" with whatever reason they have. Now the shark is obvious because they most likely will growl that they are not interested off the bat and may even include a door slamming for their satisfaction.
Besides all these characters, I am finding a lot of the interactions very amusing. Also I get paid well enough and it's something that can be added to my resume!
Cheers,
Claire
