Someone told me the past month that I need to find my own woman. The back story on this statement is I have not been single for the past four years and have been with three different guys. Whoa shocker. Anyway it didn't make sense to me. At first I thought, "What is this? My own woman? What women can find their own woman?" Thus began the long process of searching the internet.
After a lot of thought and the fourth viewing of the entire first season of Girls, I have come to the conclusion "I can find my own woman."
First of all what is your own woman? I found that being your own woman consisted of doing things for you only.
I also found this video on becoming self-fulfilling. She included the Gestalt prayer by the psychotherapist Fritz Perls:
I do my thing and you do your thing.
I am not in this world to live up to your expectations,
And you are not in this world to live up to mine.
You are you, and I am I,
and if by chance we find each other, it's beautiful.
If not, it can't be helped.
(Fritz Perls, "Gestalt Therapy Verbatim", 1969)
This statement just sings "being your own woman".
It's important to do your own thing, no matter what gender. I find that in this current society, men are encouraged more to be their own self than women. Women, even young girls, shouldn't be told that they need men in their lives or that they need to try attracting one. Society needs to encourage females that their happiness is up to themselves.
Relating this to New Year Resolutions, I shall learn how to be me. All while doing so, I will dance.
Cheers,
Claire
